"baby alpaca Joya" "Alpacas On a Shoestring"

an article by Alice Y. Brown

Riches come in various forms. There are material riches, spiritual riches, familial riches, and emotional riches. Alpacas can bring people all of these kinds of riches. However, for some people, getting started with alpacas can seem like an improbable or even impossible undertaking due to the lack of material riches. Can those undertaking the adventure on a " shoestring" enjoy alpacas? What avenues are open to help make alpaca dreams come true even when pocket books say, "I don't think so!"

One suggestion would be to be patient. Secondly, research everything about alpacas, especially financial aspects. Thirdly, evaluate assets and consider where funds can be allocated for alpacas. Be realistic, remember there are many ways to enjoy having alpacas from having just a few fiber or pet quality animals to large breeding farms and all kinds of in between situations.

Any business takes several years before it will run in the black, the alpaca business is no different. The initial outlay of funds is considerable, but expenses do taper off once all the big items are purchased. Perhaps for some, retirement funds can be reallocated. Others look into farm type loans. For others taking on a temporary extra job may be the way to gather extra funds and stay out of debt. Staying out of debt has its advantages for those operating on a shoestring as all the money can go directly into the business and limited funds do not have to go to pay high interest rates.

Today many farms offer some type of payment plan for alpaca buyers. Visit as many farms as possible and see what each offers. With patience and perseverance you will, sooner or later, be ready to make that first alpaca purchase. After the animals are on the farm, those doing alpacas on a "shoestring" would be wise to put away some money for unexpected expenses. After buying all the necessary equipment, and hay, and food etc., people doing alpacas on a shoestring can improvise to save money. Again research is key. Don't buy the first piece of equipment that comes along. Do comparison-shopping, ask other alpaca people where they got their chute, scale, or hay bins. Sometimes even used equipment can be purchased from other farms. Shoestring alpaca business people need to be handy, because building some equipment can cut prices in half or better. People have built all kinds of alpaca equipment from shearing tables, to chutes, to hay bins. Use your imagination and ingenuity to save money.

Above all else, share your love of alpacas with all you meet. As you do, you will find in time that this is a great marketing tool for selling your alpacas. Having a true love for alpacas will cause others to want to learn about them and maybe make a purchase from your farm someday. There are all kinds of ways to promote your farm. Be innovative, get together with other local breeders and plan something together. Joining forces with other farms cuts expenses and makes events bigger. These all are tools that people can use to raise alpacas and sell them , even when you have a shoestring budget!
